Founded in 1981 Great Bear Foundation offers the only truly low-impact, economical, non-exploitative Churchill polar bear tours. Field courses follow the example set by the legendary pioneer of polar bear biology, Dr. Charles Jonkel. Jonkel established the first capture-and-handling procedures for polar bears and helped to draft the International Polar Bear Agreement as the Canadian government representative. Our Montana office addresses worldwide issues facing bears and their habitats, with a primary focus on the bears of North America. Our projects address bear attractants in residential areas, protecting and connecting grizzly bear habitat, climate change, and bear safety and ecology education. Our Northern office, in Haines, Alaska, focuses on issues facing the Chilkoot River Corridor, as well as boarder issues facing the bears of Alaska, NW Canada, and the Circumpolar North. Contact us to set up a custom bear-viewing tour on the Chilkoot River, or bear safety and ecology workshops.
